Dave Alkire

Glen David Alkire, 82, of Charlotte, N. C., peacefully departed this world on Jan. 2, 2016.

The family will celebrate Mr. Alkire privately and announce a larger celebration of his life at a later date.

Dave was born in Lexington, on July 12, 1933 to Helen and Leonard Alkire and was a member of the LHS class of 1951. He graduated with a BS in Chemical Engineering, a BA in English and a minor in German from the University of Nebraska. Upon graduation, Dave attended Army Intelligence School and Army Language School with a concentration in Japanese and served in Okinawa,Japan. He took employment with Celanese Fibers in 1959 and continued to serve them for over 30 years. It was also at Celanese that he met his wife, June, an employee and fashion show model. They recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. 

A lifelong learner, Dave continued his professional education at Harvard Business School and Virginia Tech, and studied languages recreationally post-retirement at UNC Charlotte (Spanish and German), Middlebury College (Spanish) and UNC Chapel Hill where he spent two years in the Master’s Program for German Literature.

Additionally, he was a competitive tennis player, a Flying Scot skipper, and a committed volunteer for his church and community. He ran the Charlotte Observer Marathon at age 52, rode his bike across the state of Tennessee at age 54, took up windsurfing and hiking in his late 50s, and learned to swim in his 60s, ultimately winning at a regional level and competing at the national level of the Senior Games.

He was a member of the Buddy Kemp “Live Poets” Society, volunteered with refugees and immigrants in theCharlotte area, served as an interpreter, Spanish and ESL instructor, and helped to build a Habitat for Humanity house. He was respected for his wisdom and intellect, and enjoyed for his kind heart and bright sense of humor.

Mr. Alkire is survived by his wife, June; his daughter, Kristen Alkire Eshleman; son-in-law, Jonathan; and grandchildren, Ethan, Kelsey and Evan. He was adored by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.

Ann Andersen

Millicent “Ann” Andersen, 83, of Papillion, Nebraska, former rural Lexington resident, died Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at Hillcrest Country Estates in Papillion.

Ann was born August 25, 1933, in Lexington, Nebraska, daughter of Arthur and Millicent (White) Kopf.

She attended the Reed school and school district #59 through eighth grade. She went on to Lexington graduating with the class of 1951. She attended Kearney Teachers College and then taught at the Reed school for one year. Ann married Paul Anders Andersen at First Lutheran Church in Buffalo on August 10, 1952. They had five children, Angie, Kevin, Kristy, Kyle, and Kerry. They farmed and ranched northwest of Lexington. Paul preceded her in death on November 24, 2007, after 55 years of marriage.

Ann was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Cozad. She was a former member of the church council, Sunday school teacher, and Sunday school superintendent. She was the chairperson for the annual fall church supper for many years. She was a strong supporter of her children’s 4-H activities. She enjoyed baking, cooking, gardening, playing cards, sewing, and family gatherings. She also enjoyed spending many hours watching her grandchildren’s activities. One of her joys was helping with the Christmas programs at District #44R.

Ann is survived by her children, Angie (Rodney) Sall of Lexington, Nebraska, Kristy (John) Toy of Waverly, Nebraska, and Kerry (Susan) Andersen of Sachse, Texas; daughter-in-law, Paula Andersen of Elkhorn, Nebraska; nine grandchildren: Blake (Crystal) Sall, Brett (Brittany) Sall, Andrea (Thomas) Cone, Aaron (Annie) Andersen, Andrew Toy, Abigail Layne Hamilton, Parker Hamilton, Abagail Grace Andersen, and Claire Ann Andersen; five great-grandchildren, Shank Sall, Shad Sall, Shayden Sall, Thomas Cone, V, and Reid Andersen; one brother-in-law, Sid (Marlene) Andersen; two sisters, Patty Newell of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Becky (Don Mican) Kopf of Overland Park, Kansas; and one brother, Danny (Jo) Kopf of Lexington, Nebraska; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Millicent Kopf, her husband Paul, two stepsisters-in-law Evelyn Buswell and Helen Demyanovich, infant son Kyle, and son Kevin.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, October 15, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church northwest of Lexington with Kathy Gundell, PMA officiating.

Burial will be in the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Friday, October 14, 2016, from 5-7 p.m. at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Chapel in Lexington.

Cynthia Barnes

Cynthia R. Barnes, 82 of San Antonio, TX went to the Lord peacefully on 14 April 2015.

She was born 8 June 1932 in Sumner, Nebraska to Cecil Washburn and Leola Eaton.

She was married 41 years to Robert L. Barnes.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Cynthia was a devoted child of God, wife, mother, and grandmother.

She is survived by her brother William (Jacquee) Washburn; sister Shirley Munson; beloved sister-in-laws Donna [Barnes] Crain and JoAnn [Barnes] Woehrle; children Barb (Steve) Gates, Rodney (Diane) Barnes, William (Lynnette) Barnes, and Bobbye Sullivan; grandchildren Bill, Richard, Ricci, Ryan, Anthony; great-grandchildren Jude, Harley Cate; many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was a faithful servant to our Lord; a church pianist for 40 years; dedicated to her friends from Fairview Evangelical Free Church and Floresville First Baptist Church - especially the Hope Sunday School class. Her spiritual gift (Romans 12:6-8) was 'Serving' and she will be lovingly remembered for the encouraging cards and notes she sent.

A 1:30 p.m., Graveside Service will be held on Monday, April 20, 2015 at Mission Burial Park South. Memorials may be made to Samaritan's Purse or Salvation Army.

Janice Brauer

Janice L. Brauer, age 83, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell, Nebraska. She was born February 25, 1933 at Lexington, Nebraska to Wrex A. and Ruth L. (McCarther) Greenlee.

Janice grew up in Lexington and attended Lexington High School and later receive her G.E.D. She married Kenneth Brauer at the Methodist Church in Lexington on May 29, 1949. To this union six children were born; Rosalie, Greg, Karla, Jeff, Dawn, & Mark. They made their home in Eustis and stayed there the rest of her life.

Janice enjoyed driving the school bus for 30 plus years. She was active in her kid’s lives by volunteering to lead their girl and boy scouts troops. She worked at many area nursing homes, loved to help decorate the church and senior center for Christmas, and was a talented artist working with painting, drawing, and sculpting. The last few years, she lived at Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell to be near family.

She was a member of the Farnam United Methodist Church of Farnam, Christian Women’s Club, Eustis Rescue Squad, and Walk to Emmaus.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Kenneth, and sisters Sharon Fisher and Wanda Hopkins, brother Larry, and infant son Mark.

Janice is survived by her Sons: Greg and wife Julie Brauer of Elm Creek, Nebraska, Jeff Brauer of Lincoln, Nebraska, Daughters: Rosalie and husband Bruce Bonini of Lexington, Nebraska, Karla and husband Tim Petermann of Arapahoe, Nebraska, Dawn Brauer of Bancroft, Nebraska, Grandchildren: 12 Great Grandchildren: 15.
